Do You Need REAL ID?

Infographic from the Illinois Secretary of State, Alexi Giannoulias, disputing myths about Real ID cards. Real ID is not required to drive, vote, or prove citizenship. Standard Illinois driver's licenses and IDs are valid until the printed expiration date. Real IDs will continue to be issued after May 7. You will be able to board a plane after May 7 with a valid Passport, military ID, or Global Entry. If you are not flying domestically or visiting federal facilities, you do not need a Real ID.

REAL ID is currently optional, despite what you may have heard about the May 7th deadline.
Please visit realid.ilsos.gov and use the interactive questionnaire to find out if you need a REAL ID by the deadline.
When you’re ready to apply for a REAL ID (either before the deadline or after,) you can use the website above to find a participating facility and get an interactive checklist of documents you’ll need to take with you.
Please contact the Secretary of State’s Office with any further questions.
